Job Seekers Fear They Fell For Scam

Greensboro, NC -- Frustrated job seekers are greeted by locked doors at the building they thought housed their future employer.

There is no sign of Spic-N-Span Cleaning Service, Inc., which some say took money from possibly hundreds of people.

Alleged victims said they heard about the corporate cleaning job on Craigslist and by word of mouth. They were told they would be cleaning businesses, like the Koury Convention Center. They applied at an office rented by the company and were told to pay $55 up front for uniforms.

They said weeks have gone by and there has been no sign of work, and now the company is nowhere to be found.

"I was waiting on that job to come through. Now I got to start all over looking for work," said Delores Cheek, who said she paid $30 and was going to pay the rest at a later time.

"I was very excited, very excited and getting hired on the spot like that, I was real excited," she said.

Harvey Ward said he was also excited to finally have the possibility of work. He said, "It made me feel more like a man because now I say, 'ok, now I can help provide for my family,' but to now just have that snatched away, it's hard."

Ward has a receipt for the $55 he paid and was even given a name badge. He said he opened a bank account for direct deposit and gave his social security number when he applied for the job. Now he's afraid his personal information is in the wrong hands.

"To have people sell you a dream, it's unbelievable," he said.

The Greensboro Police Department is investigating the situation.

The Better Business Burea has no record of Spic-N-Span Cleaning Service and said it is not an accredited business. The BBB reminds job seekers to be careful when looking at jobs online since it can be difficult to check the validity of the business.

It's a good idea to check with the BBB for a company's history.
